I find the two faculties to be related. The more in tune you are with the otter, the more you will sense its presence, and also the more you will unlock its advanced understanding of reality, and so gain glimpses into the future. That's how it's always worked for me, anyway.

From my understanding, it differes greatly between species of otters. Sea otters are able to hold their breath for 4-5 minutes, and can reach a maximum depth of roughly 300 feet, with the deepest dive ever recorded being 318 feet. However, the average dive is under a minute long and the average depth is roughly 60 feet, which would imply that depths greater than 60ish feet would be somewhat uncomfortable or impractical for otters to undertake regularly and only really happen when necessary.

River otters, on the other hand, cannot go nearly as deep or for nearly as long, bottoming out at around a maximum depth of 60 feet per dive. However, they can swim at speeds of up to 7 mph, whereas sea otters usually don't go too much faster than 5-6. River otters can also swim for a quarter of a mile underwater before needing to come up for air, and can hold their breath for around 4 minutes comfortably, with the maximum recorded time sitting at roughly 8 minutes before needing to come up for air.

It is immaterial whether one is aware of the otter or not, because it can be said with certainty that in any case, the otter is aware of itself. The otter knows where it is at all times. Because the fact of the otter is established already within the otter's consciousness itself, otter is noticeably present in objective reality.
Further, even if otter is not noticed directly, one can still discern the effects of otter upon an area. This includes finding otter tracks which shows that an area has been affected by an otter.

An otter is more than the sum of its parts because its individual parts are not alive while the otter is, it is the assembly to a whole being that makes it alive.

The individual parts of the otter must by necessity resemble the characteristics of the otter as a whole, and the characteristics of the otter must be reflected in its individual parts, because it is this integrity that makes the otter what it is.

Every part of the otter must follow and adhere to the essential otter-ness so that the total sum of the parts is an otter. This essential characteristic is "otteriness". If a part of an otter is not ottery then it is foreign, as with things such as parasites and worms which can be found in wild otters, these may be part of the otter's body but they are not ottery hence foreign and destructive.

Imagine this: An otter with the tail of a fox. Is the otter still an otter? The tail of an otter makes up part of the otter's essence while at the same time the otter's otteriness (i.e. its state of being, its character) is reflected in the otter's tail.

If an otter had a tail of a fox, not only would its ability to swim be diminished (one of the key characteristics of an otter), but aesthetically it would no longer truly resemble an otter.
